Food and Drink to You

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

The food and beverages industry is one of the biggest industries that there is. Everyone both loves and needs food and it is therefore no surprise to see that in the United Kingdom the food and beverage industry is worth around 30 billion pounds a year, and in the United States the figure is a staggering $558 billion per annum.

Due to the size of the industry it is no surprise that one of the most popular areas to purchase a franchise is in the food and drinks sector.

There are many different types of food franchises; these include: fast food restaurants, ice cream parlors, mobile food stalls, bakeries, healthy eating stores; to name but a few. Many well known fast food outlets offer franchise opportunities in their efforts to expand and build their brand names. For example McDonalds, pizza hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken are all franchised companies.

Operating a food franchise has many advantages, such as:

  • Demand for food – we need to eat; there will always be a market to sell food, whatever the state of the economy.
  • High success rate – If you buy into a successful franchise then as long as you work hard the business is likely to be successful. This is the research required for successfully opening up in a given location should have been carried out by the franchisor.
  • Support – an advantage of purchasing a food or drink franchise is the support given by the franchisor. Setting up a business is not to be taken lightly, and the helpful advice and training that is given will go a long way in helping you set up a successful business.

There are of course downsides to purchasing a franchise:

Do You Enjoy Pumpkin Spice Coffee?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Do you know what? I love pumpkin spice, butter toffee, mocha mint and all the other varieties of coffee flavors. I think for me, it is just this time of year. Living here in upstate, New York and those of you who believe upstate is the North end of New York City, would be wrong. Upstate, is actually anything above New York City.

We are close to Syracuse, home of the fighting Orange and this time of year means football, cooler temperatures and all the leaves on the trees changing to beautiful orange, red, yellow, and green colors, and watching the rolling hillside explode with vibrant colors.

It is also the time of year I start craving everything fall; like football, hunting and my delicious flavored coffees, teas, cocoa beverages and of course great food! There is just something great about the full flavor of a great cup of pumpkin spice coffee when you are standing out on the porch watching the turkeys or the whitetail deer running across the hillside, or standing down at the barn looking over Oneida Lake (it sits down in the bottom of the Mohawk valley), nestled in amongst the colors of fall with the mist rising off the water and into the blue skies.

So, to make this time of year more fun, easier, and be able to indulge my hot beverage habit, I started looking into the new trend of single serve home brewing systems, and found that there are a lot out there. I have been so set in my ways of going out and buying a one pound bag of coffee, getting it in a few different flavors, and either mixing a couple, or having one kind at a time, that I never really thought there could be a better way.

Cooking Tips For Pasta

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Pasta can be a very quick and simple dish to whip together for a meal. It is especially easy to cook in high volumes and therefore perfect for feeding a large group of people. Though cooking pasta is generally a fairly fun, simple and straight forward task, there are a few pasta cooking tips which can help even the most decorated pasta veteran to improve their dishes.

The water in which the pasta is cooked can greatly impact the way the dish turns out. Make sure there is enough water in your pot because cooking pasta in too little water can cause it to stick together. If you are afraid this may be the case, add a tablespoon of oil to help eliminate sticking.

Adding salt to the water can also help with firmness and bring out the natural flavor.

Fresh pasta is a bit of a different ball game than processed pasta. Remember that when cooking pasta that is made fresh, it tends to cook quicker, so be sure to keep an eye on it. Test it frequently to ensure that it does not overcook. Do not cover the pot while the pasta is cooking as this will cause it to overcook.

To ensure that the pasta is as fresh as possible when it reaches the table, it is a good idea to serve it in a warm bowl because pasta cools very quickly. The best way to do this is by placing a bowl under the colander where the pasta is drained. After the bowl is emptied of water it can be filled with pasta and served fresh.

How to Make a Barbeque Fish

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Barbeque Fish is something not many people have tried. It’s certainly worth doing though as there are so many delicious fish out there. You can apply any seasoning you like to fish, but there are many that are best cooked with the simplest of seasoning. A gentle sprinkling of salt is often all the fish needs. Beautiful sardines are mouthwatering good just cooked on the barbeque and eaten with fresh crusty bread.

Stronger flavour fishes like exotic steaks of swordfish or even tuna can stand a stronger seasoning and you can use various marinades to enhance the flavours of these fishes. Prawns are great barbequed and are often given a sweet and sour marinade.

You don’t need a barbeque cookbook to find ideas for cooking fish or making up marinades. All your normal cookbooks will offer suggestions and you just have to adapt them for the grill!

Sometimes cooking fish within tinfoil parcels makes for a mouthwatering supper – these are easy to do on the barbeque and the foil package keeps the juices in so the fish is moist and tender. Remember to take into account how thick fish steaks are when cooking on the barbeque.

Fish hints to help you get the best results:

- oil the grill or use a special fish holder

- use disposable tin foil trays on the barbeque to cook fish. It’ll make you more confident turning them over without worrying about them slipping through the grill.

- place fish flesh side down first. As it starts to cook it may become more crumbly so finish on the skin side which will hold it together better.

- add extra marinade whilst cooking – but don’t use what the raw fish was soaked in. When you make a marinade keep 1/4 – 1/3 separate. This is a great hint for marinating chicken too.

Quick and Easy Ice Cream Cake

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Ice Cream Cake is a fun and delicious way to end a meal or celebrate a special occasion. I think the store bought version is boring, tasteless and very expensive.

So for my daughter’s birthday, we had to order their own unique cake with ice. We have used all of his favorite ice cream, cookies, candies and decorating gel exactly what she wanted. We also had a terrible time to talk about the nature of the cake, the number of layers and flavors would taste better together.

The first thing to do, one with a piece of wax paper or parchment paper and allow to hang the paper over the sides of pan line. In addition, at this moment, remember to take the ice in the freezer so that it can soft.

In a large bowl, beat, beat 1 1 / 2 cup cream and 2 tablespoons powdered sugar until stiff. A layer of cream on the bottom of the pan and the roast in the freezer for a few minutes. Place the cookies in a bag and crush with a rolling pin, then some of the cookies to spread the cream.

Add softened ice cream and back to the freezer for several minutes. Then repeat steps ice cream, cookies, and to fill almost the pot. Finish coat with cream, top with chocolate chips or candy. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze until firm.

When finished, remove the plastic film and simultaneously the excess paper, remove the ice cream cake and remove from the pan to serving plate. Dispose of the complete paper and your organization by customizing the cake with the letter from Frost. be instead of the typical home, remember very creative, adding a message, poem or short, intelligent.

Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

When people started saying the chocolate was healthy I did not think that it was true. I merely thought that it was people using it as an excuse to eat something which tasted good that was thought of as being unhealthy and had no idea about the dark chocolate health benefits. People often are looking for a good excuse to eat something that they like but have been told is not good for them. However, it seems that there are some health benefits to eating dark chocolate. It contains similar health benefits as dark vegetables because it contains flavonoids which act as antioxidants in the body. The flavonoids also help to decrease blood pressure because they produce nitric oxide which helps to balance some of the hormones in the body responsible for blood pressure.

There has also been evidence to show that it can reduce bad cholesterol levels due to it containing one third oleic acid which is a healthy fat found in olive oil. There are also benefits to mental health with the endorphins and serotonin that is produced when it is eaten. These both give feelings of happiness which is great for anyone that tends to get depressed or just for overall well being.

They could reduce stress which can be the cause of some nasty illnesses and lowers the immune system. Although chocolate should not be used as a replacement for advice from a doctor or any sort of medication, there is evidence to show that it does have some health benefits.

It is important to make sure that it is dark chocolate that is consumed as not in massive amounts as it is still calorifically high and will therefore increase weight if eaten in excess. Also make sure that it is eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet in order to see the maximum dark chocolate health benefits.
